Davis Park
In September 2022, My HomeCourt and Providence College Galleries [PCG], in collaboration with Providence Parks, unveiled a newly revitalized basketball court at Davis Park in the Smith Hill neighborhood of Providence. The court features a large-scale mural by renowned Providence artist Lois Harada.
The Design
Over the last several months, 2022 artist Lois Harada, MHC and PCG have conducted surveys and held community outreach events with various neighborhood stakeholders, including the Friends of Davis Park, Nathanial Bishop Middle School, and the nearby Veterans Administration and hospital.
Harada’s artwork often employs the power of text to navigate histories, interrogates ideas, and frame responses to issues. Her artwork for My HomeCourt 2022 at Davis Park is titled LET’S PLAY, the design features bold textual art in multiple languages to reflect the diversity of the park’s neighboring communities.
